What Causes Codependency in Relationships?

What Causes Codependency in Relationships?
A number of our clients here at CCC Counseling Services struggle with codependency in their relationships. But what does it really mean to be “codependent” and what causes it to happen?

Defining Codependency

Codependency (relationship addiction) is an emotional and behavioral condition that interferes with a person’s ability to develop a healthy, mutually beneficial relationship. Experts define it as the mental, emotional, physical, and/or spiritual reliance on a partner, friend, or family member.

Some signs include:

  • Walking on eggshells to avoid conflict
  • Feeling a constant need to check in with the other person to ask permission to do daily tasks
  • Often being the one apologizing even when you do nothing wrong
  • Regularly trying to change or “rescue” your significant other
  • Doing anything for your significant other, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable

Why Codependency Happens

Codependency can be learned by watching and imitating other people who display the same kind of behavior. It’s often passed down from generation to generation.

It occurs in dysfunctional families where members typically feel anger, pain, shame, or fear that is often denied or ignored. Underlying issues that may factor-in to the condition may include:

  • Addiction
  • Abuse
  • Chronic physical illness
  • Mental illness
